I hope you have had a good rest and break from the pages of books

However, from henceforth, we are going into a reading frenzy. We have much catching up to do.

This month, we will be reading a book about the passion to chase and obtain the seemingly unattainable.

We will be consuming the book: The God Chasers "My Soul Will Follow Hard After Thee"
by: Tommy Tenny.

The Reading Begins... ! Book Reading for January

Hello fellow book worms,

I trust you had a good holiday season; of maybe resting, eating, and spending time with the family. It is good to be alive to see yet another year and indeed a new decade. I pray these are your best yet!

Thank you for the emails and comments regarding the previous book reads.

Summary of lessons from last reading:

we were inspired by the encouragement to push themselves just that little further, realising that they were indeed made for greatness.
We also learnt a great lesson about time management. From the Prime minister, to the Queen, to you and I, we all get 24 hours in a day and no more. What we choose to do with these hours on a daily basis will eventually manifest itself in our future.
Finally, we learnt that there is no coach, teacher, guide like God. He is the good and perfect Shepherd afterall. We simply have to trust Him 100% to teach and guide us through the sometimes trying pathways in life.

BOOK READING FOR JANUARY

The title of the book selected to open the reading sessions for this year seems appropriate. It is about learning the reason why we are here to do what we must and should do; the reason for our being.

I hope you are basking and living out the wisdom you have been gathering from all the pages so far.

For the next few months, we will be consuming and hopefully putting to practice some of the books below.

We start with a recent book written by renowned writer, T.D. Jakes: Reposition Yourself: Living Life Without Limits.

Book Reading for the month of June

Hello fellow bookworms,

Welcome to Summer! If you reside in England, you would agree with me that the weather has been absolutely beautiful. I am thankful to God for the ability to enjoy such splendid sunshine.

In a weather such as this, a simple pleasure of mine is going to the park with a couple of books in hand and getting stuck in. How about you?

Hopefully, the books we will be consuming this month, will enrich your time in the sun and also provoking questions about the meanings and pleasures of life and love.

We will be consuming two books for the month of June.

The first book is called: Purpose Driven Life, written by Rick Warren

A Brief Synopsis:
The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time.

The second book is quite a good one and it is called:

Tropical Fish: Tales From Entebbe and it is written by Doreen Baingana

Brief Synopsis:
Ugandan-born Baingana chronicles in her debut collection of linked stories the lives of three sisters growing up in Entebbe after the fall of Idi Amin. Though most of the stories take place in Africa, "Lost in Los Angeles" follows the principal character, Christine Mugisha, as she travels to California, where she grapples with a different breed of racism than she faces in her own country. The title story, "Tropical Fish," follows Christine's apathetic affair with an older, affluent white man who woos her with the many perks of his money. "A Thank-You Note" is a letter from Christine's older sister, Rosa, to an ex-lover that angrily and poignantly recounts her battle with AIDS. Baingana's characters are confined by a passivity and powerlessness (Christine likens herself to a plastic doll) rarely broken, though the collection ends on a hopeful note.

Book Reading for the month of April

Firstly, Happy Easter fellow book worms.

Last month's book reading was a very interesting one. I could hardly put the book down from the moment I picked it up. There was a lot of 'ouch' moments whilst reading them as it went on to present a new meaning to the term and action 'dating' !! I learnt a a whole lot of new things, and had to let go of old reasonings and thinkings - not an easy feat I tell you.

Quite a few of the recommendations, I am working on and through right now, and I must say it presents quite an interesting reality to dating. How about you? How did you find the book or what did you learn from it?

Moving on to this month's book reading; in view of the global economic climate I have decided to choose a book that goes the opposite direction of the media's message of doom and gloom.

What we allow to reside within our minds and seep into our sub-consciousness, eventually becomes our reality. To escape and rise above the reality of recession and stories of doom and gloom that is evident in today's world, we must change our thinking. When we change our thinking to positive things and success stories, for instance, and let those things become our more dominant thoughts; eventually, it will be come our sweet reality.

I am sure most have heard the saying "as a man thinks in his mind, that is what he will eventually become". What are you thinking about yourself and your situation or circumstance?

I hope this book further encourages and teaches us how change our thinking, and eventually our lives for the good.

Thank you for your comments on January's reading materials. I must say that Joel Osteen has done it again with the book Become a Better You. It was a simple read, which is relevant to every day reading. One is able to relate guidance and encouragement he gives into daily living.

January's book reading has thought and encouraged us to start this year, and all things for that matter, well; positively and with a champion spirit.

For February, we move towards books that are entertaining, inspiring, yet at the same time educating and challenging.

The first book for this month is:

Five People you meet in heaven by Mitchm Albom

Brief Synopsis:

In many ways, The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a simple little book; as is so often the case, the most profound of answers are revealed most clearly in the simplest of explanations. This is not a book about heaven in a religious sense; the truths it establishes are to be found right here in our own lives: every life has a purpose, every person and every action is related, and while you may not be able to discern it now, it all makes sense in the end.

While this is a great and rewarding read, some readers will never give themselves fully to the story and will thus wonder what the big deal about this book is. For many, though, The Five People You Meet in Heaven will provide an important level of comfort and inspiration for those who see only a past of regrets and no future. We all sometimes wonder why we are here and whether it's even worth going on day after meaningless, monotonous day. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

A brief synopsis:

In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do. He manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan--while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. And he does this on his first try.

The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. ("...I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.")

We will be consuming the two books from the 3rd to 28th February.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I wish you success and fulfilment of dreams and desires in all areas of your life in 2009 and beyond.

Being a new year, most will sit down and make resolutions, a list of what they want to achieve by the end of the year; come rain, sun or high waters!

However, it is safe to say that, our attitude and outlook as we approach the 'work' and 'walk' we have in front of us this year, will make a huge difference, and further release us into our respective destiny.

To start any tasks and indeed a new phase of life; a new year, it is important that we approach it with a renewed and positive attitude. The phrase "You cannot pour new wine into old wine skins comes to mind here"

With that in mind, the book readings for this month encourage us to embrace a new and improved attitude, so that we can indeed become better individuals, better equipped for the work and walk in hand.

How are we all, I bet we are all still hyper from the awesome day in History - November 4th. I pray God uses President Barack Obama for his glory, and that the impact of the impending changes to come will be felt across the whole world.

Books we will be consuming

Following the feel of season we are in and the theme of hope and faith, we will be reading these books for the month of November.

First Book

Dare to Dream . . . Then Do It: What Successful People Know and Do by by John C. Maxwell.

Everybody has dreams. They're part of what makes us uniquely us. But not everybody knows how to make their dreams come true. Learn to awaken your dreams and make them come true, to impact this and generations to come.

Second book

Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley.

We must remember that the start of change we see today is as a result of the seeds and solid foundations our ancestors planted; through tedious training, hard work, working in hope and faith that it will impact theirs and future generations (us).

And so, for the benefit of the next generation, guess what?

Ready or not, we are NEXT!

Thank you to those that put forward book suggestions for this month's reading.

Following on from last month's theme, we again have two small and easy books to read this month.

The first book is THE ALCHEMIST, by Paulo Coelho. This book has been around for a while and a good oldie. It talks about having a dream, but more importantly, working to bring it to reality. I believe this will be an interesting and inspiring read.

The second book is called The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne. It's a book about simple things we all know, but sometimes need reminding of. Such things as, whatever you desire or want to be, starts with a dream and then followed by action.

October Book Reading Suggestions and Timelines

Welcome to the month of October. I pray it is all that you pray and hope it to be.

So, what did you think of the books selected for September?

I thought the "Money Secret" is so relevant for this season we are in. It teaches us how to get ourselves out of debt, if we are in it, and how to live within our means.

But more importantly, it teaches us the plots society uses to try and suck us into the never ending debt whirlpool and keep us there.

I also thought the "Richest man in Babylon" portrayed and taught, simple, yet profound foundation skills, thinking and insight on how to build wealth, with what we have and from where we currently are in life.

I must say, the books seem very relevant to our present day lives, especially now the government and whoever has a voice, seem to be calling upon the wrath of the gods of credit crunch and all sorts of financial and wealth crisis!

It is good, in the midst of it all, to hear and read a voice of reason and wisdom to help us along as we strive to avoid the economic portholes littering our way.

Hello there,

How are you getting on with "Audacity of Hope"? I look forward to the comments and discussions on the book.

A reminder that the reading deadline for Audacity of Hope is Sunday 31st August 2008.

A page A Day will participate in the Glamour Book Club competition - Glamour September Issue - Yaaay!

I will send a submission to glamour by Friday 29 August 2008. If we win, we will be invited by glamour magazine to review a selected book and then be featured in the October issue. I hope we win, it could be our claim to fame!

Book Selected for August Reading

Hello there,

Well, I'm afraid to say that, not many book suggestions came forth this month. This means as previously mentioned, we will pick the book that came 2nd during our last book selection process.

This means, the book we will be reading for the next 3 weeks is going to be:

The audacity of Hope - Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream by Barack Obama.

The reading end date for this book is Sunday 31st August 2008.

Remember to check your local library or with friends to find out if they have a copy, before you set out to buy one.

The audacity of Hope - Book Introduction
Obama engages themes raised in his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, shares personal views on faith and values and offers a vision of the future that involves repairing a "political process that is broken" and restoring a government that has fallen out of touch with the people.

The first book is now truly and out of the way. What were your thoughts about it? Interesting, boring, or plain silly? Please drop us a comment.

Now, it's time to put forward suggestions, in view of voting for the book to read this month.

If no book is suggested, we will select book that came in second last month, which was :
The audacity of Hope by Barack Obama.

However, if there is a draw in the suggested books put forward, we will read both books and extend the reading duration (usually 3 weeks).

Book of the Month Selected - Happy Reading!!!

Voting for the first book (Book of the Month) to read is now closed, and I am pleased to announce the results.

In 3rd place is: The complete autobiography of Mya Angelou

In 2nd Place is: The audacity of Hope by Barack Obama

And finally, coming 1st - the book we will be reading, reviewing and commenting on for the next three weeks is:

No Time for Goodbye by Linwood Barclay

So, from today 10 July to 31 July 2008, A page A Day book club will be reading this book.

Once you have read the book, please post your review comments on the website, using the comments link and following the instructions.

Revised Guidelines and Timelines

Due to more people wishing to join A Page A Day, the dates and guidelines for Book Suggestion, reading and review have been rescheduled and revised.

The new deadline to submit a request for a book to be read is Wednesday 10th July 2008.

Revised guidelines are as follows:

Book Selection:
Books with the most suggested reading votes will be selected for everyone to read

Duration of reading:
From the day of selection, readers will have 3 weeks to read and comment on the book. A notice will be placed on the website to notify everyone, along with where to get the recommended book from.

Just before the 3 weeks is up, a notice will be placed on the site and an email sent to all, inviting everyone to recommend the next book to read, and the selection process will be followed through.

As requested before, please send the following information:
Name
Email address
Books you would like to read or you have read and would like to recommend

You could send this information 2 ways:

Use the comment link on the blog: click on this, follow the instruction (if you don't have a blogger account, select annonymous) type in the details requested above, type in your name and press comment.

Hello there,

Welcome to A page A Day Book Club. After various conversations with friends and family alike, we realised that it is the season to increase and broaden our horizon and knowledge through the simple pleasure of reading. The season to wrap ourselves up in seamless words and to invigorate the mind, spirit and soul.

The aim is to pick 2 books a month for members to read. Members will be invited to suggest a book and a vote will be taken on which 2 books to read. There is no limit to the genre of books, from spiritual, to romance, to thrillers.

You are hereby invited to join in the book reading and the conversation. Click the subscription link to join and you will get regular updates on what books to read, the timeliness and comments from readers.

Furthermore, you don't have to read the recommended books, you could simply drop a comment or suggest a book that has simply made you breathless!
